He is a photo historian and the author of several scholarly books on Spanish Pictorialism, including The Photographic Impressionists of Spain: A History of the Aesthetics and Technique of Pictorial Photography, New York, 1989: Schmidt de las Heras: Fotografías 1944-1960. Sandy is a landscape photographer, working primarily with large format and ultra large format cameras, He prints primarily with alternative processes, includiing carbon, kallitype and palladium and his published numerous articles in both print and on-line sources on this type of printing. He is one of the best known carbon printers in the world and has conducted numerous workshops on carbon printing both in the USA and abroad. He is the author of The Book of Carbon and Carbro: Contemporary Procedures for Monochrome Pigment Printmaking, 2002. He also experiments with developer formulation and his technical article on pyro staining developers, "An Introduction to Pyro Staining Developers", originally publishe in English at http://www.unblinkingeye.com/, has been translated and published in on-line journals in the French and Russiana languages.
