Alternative Printing Workshop with Sandy King

Alternative Printing Workshop with Sandy King

Date to Be Determined

The alternative printing workshop at Elevator Digital in November 2007 will be an introduction to making hand crafted prints using the silver iron processes, kallitype and vandyke brown. Both processes are capable of rich long scale prints similar to pt./pd. Most of the working procedures of kallitype and vandyke brown are very similar to those of kallitype and pt./pd. so the knowledge and experience derived from the workshop can be carried over to other metal salt processes such as palladium and platinum, including Ziatype and Ware/Malde.

The workshop will treat in detail the following information.

  1. What equipment, including light sources, is needed for printing with alternative processes, and how to use them.
  2. What supplies and materials, such as chemistry and paper, is required for printing with metal salt processes.
  3. How to expose and develop in-camera negatives for printing with alternative processes. There will also be an introduction to making digital negatives for printing with kallitype and vandyke brown.
  4. How to coat paper with kallitype and vandyke brown sensitizers.
  5. How to expose sensitized paper.
  6. How to develop the print.

Please Note

Sandy will also do a demo of the carbon transfer process. Carbon transfer is without question one of the aristocratic photographic printing processes of all time and the opportunity to actually see such a print made by one of the contemporary masters of the process is an added bonus for the workshop.

Students are encouraged to submit in advance one suitable image file, no larger than about 7X9" by 720ppi(pixels per inch) in size. From the file a digital negative will be printed for the students future use. Upon registration those students who are interested in having a negative made will be given instructions on how to deliver the image file. The images will be uploaded to Elevator Workshops and will need to be delivered by no later than the 22nd of November. There is a 35.00 fee for creation of the digital negative.
